Which Pipe for a Solar Water Heater: CPVC Limits and What to Use

9 min read

Quick answer: Use CPVC SDR 11 for the hot water line from a solar heater, but not right at the tank. CPVC is rated for a maximum service temperature of 93°C and its pressure rating at 82°C is about 7 kg/cm², and solar water left standing on a hot afternoon can get close to or past that. Ashirvad's CPVC manual says not to connect CPVC directly to a water heater outlet and to fit a one metre metal nipple at the heater first. Never use uPVC or PVC on any hot line. A 5 m length of ¾ inch CPVC SDR 11 costs ₹337 to ₹435 with us, before GST, checked on 3 November 2026.

The usual failures on a solar hot line are not in the heater. They are in the pipe: a run that sags in the sun, a joint at the tank that lets go, or hot water that arrives lukewarm after a long bare run across the terrace. All three come down to choosing the pipe and fixing it properly. Here is what the pipe makers and the solar guidance actually say, and what it costs.

Which pipe for which job

PipeWhat the maker rates it forUse on a solar hot line?
CPVC SDR 11Maximum service temperature 93°C; working pressure 7.0 kg/cm² at 82°C (Astral), 6.93 kg/cm² (Ashirvad)Yes, from the end of the metal section onwards
CPVC SDR 13.5Same material, thinner wall; 5.6 kg/cm² at 82°CRated for hot water, but with less margin; we use SDR 11 on solar lines
uPVCMaximum service temperature 60°C, with pressure derating as it gets warm (Ashirvad)No
GI or copperMetalYes, for the first section at the heater, insulated

The CPVC figures are from the Ashirvad CPVC technical manual (pipes to IS 15778:2007) and the Astral CPVC Pro catalogue, Astral lists solar water heaters among CPVC's applications, and Ashirvad's manual gives specific instructions for solar heater lines. The uPVC limit is from Ashirvad's uPVC literature. That 60°C is an absolute ceiling, not a working temperature, which is why uPVC is a cold water pipe. Our comparison of CPVC and uPVC goes into the rest. For why the hot line should be SDR 11 rather than 13.5, see SDR 11 vs SDR 13.5.

Why solar water can be hotter than the pipe's rating

A geyser has a thermostat. A solar collector does not: it keeps heating as long as the sun is on it. When nobody draws hot water on a clear day, the water in the system keeps getting hotter. The industry term for this is stagnation.

The Plastics Pipe Institute's technical note on plastic pipe in solar heating systems (TN-14, revised 2016) puts numbers on it. Medium temperature collectors typically deliver 82 to 93°C but can reach stagnation temperatures of up to 154°C for several hours. The same note lists CPVC's elevated temperature rating at 82°C, and says plastic piping should not be used in systems with evacuated tube or concentrating collectors because of the temperatures they can reach. It also says that passive systems, a group in which it includes thermosiphon heaters, are not subject to high stagnation temperatures because of the large volume of water in the collector.

A typical rooftop unit in Bengaluru has a tank sitting above evacuated glass tubes and works by thermosiphon, so it falls between those two descriptions. The practical reading is that the pipe nearest the tank sees the hottest water in the house, and that is exactly the section the pipe makers tell you to make in metal. Your heater's own manual gives its maximum temperature. Read it before the plumber starts.

What to do about it

1. Metal at the heater, CPVC after

Ashirvad's manual is specific: it is not recommended to connect CPVC pipes directly to the water heater outlet, and that a one metre long metal nipple should be connected directly to the heater so the CPVC is not damaged by the build-up of radiant heat from the flue. On a solar heater the reason is the stagnation temperature rather than a flue, but the remedy is the same. The user's handbook on solar water heaters published with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (by the International Copper Promotion Council, 2010) says the hot water connection can be done with insulated GI or copper pipes. So: about a metre of GI or copper at the tank outlet, then a brass threaded CPVC adaptor, then CPVC SDR 11 into the house.

Put a union close to the heater as well, so the heater can be disconnected for service without cutting the line.

2. Keep the vent and relief lines metal

The vent pipe and any relief valve outlet carry the hottest water and steam in the system. One solar heater maker's manual (Saxon, Australia) strongly recommends that the pipework after the relief valve be able to carry water above 95°C, and that plastic pipe never be used between collectors and tank. Those lines are not the place to save money.

3. Consider a mixing valve on the hot outlet

The same manual notes that the heater can supply water above 50°C and recommends fitting a tempering (mixing) valve. A thermostatic mixing valve on the solar outlet blends in cold water to hold the delivered temperature at a set point. It protects people at the shower, and it also keeps the CPVC downstream well inside its rating on the hottest days. We do not stock solar mixing valves; we can quote one on request, and your heater supplier may have one made for the unit.

4. Insulate every hot pipe, and clad it outdoors

The MNRE handbook says all hot water piping needs to be insulated, and that on the outside the insulation is to be protected from rain and sun by aluminium, GI sheet or fibreglass cladding. It also recommends that the hot water pipe be of smaller diameter and shorter length to reduce heat loss. Ashirvad separately advises keeping CPVC out of direct sun even in storage, so on a terrace the cladding is doing two jobs.

Supreme's INSUflex is closed cell nitrile rubber insulation, which Supreme rates for −55°C to +105°C. Match the bore to the pipe: ½ inch CPVC is 15.9 mm outside, ¾ inch is 22.2 mm and 1 inch is 28.6 mm.

5. Allow for expansion

Astral's catalogue says CPVC, whatever the diameter, expands about 1 inch per 50 feet of length for a 50°F rise. Using Astral's metric coefficient of 6.3 × 10⁻⁵ per °C, a 10 m run heated by 50°C grows by about 31 mm. Inside a wall that movement is taken up; on an exposed terrace run it is not. Ashirvad's manual says that for CPVC pipes not embedded in the wall and carrying hot water from a solar heater, you should use one ready made expansion loop for every 12 feet of run between two fixed joints. Long straight runs that are clamped tight at both ends are what bow in the sun.

6. Support it closer than a cold line

Ashirvad's support spacing table shrinks as the water gets hotter:

Pipe sizeAt 20°CAt 70°CAt 80°C
½ inch1.7 m0.9 m0.8 m
¾ inch1.7 m0.9 m0.8 m
1 inch1.8 m1.1 m0.9 m

Astral adds that the straps should be smooth and should not stop the pipe moving lengthwise. Clamp it to hold, not to grip.

Pipe for a geyser connection

An electric geyser is easier than a solar heater because its thermostat caps the temperature. Parryware's October 2026 price book, for example, lists its Orchid geysers with a 30°C to 75°C setting range, inside CPVC's rating. CPVC SDR 11 up to the geyser is the normal choice. The connection itself is threaded: a brass threaded CPVC adaptor on the pipe, then a braided connection hose or a short metal nipple to the geyser inlet and outlet, with an angle valve or ball valve on the cold inlet so the geyser can be isolated. Ashirvad's advice not to connect CPVC directly to the heater outlet applies here too.

Questions we get asked

Which pipe is best for a solar water heater?

Insulated GI or copper for about the first metre at the heater, then CPVC SDR 11, insulated and clad where it runs outdoors.

Can CPVC pipe be used for a solar water heater?

Yes, downstream of a metal section at the heater and within its 93°C maximum. Astral lists solar heaters among CPVC's uses, and Ashirvad's manual covers how to install CPVC on solar lines.

Can PVC or uPVC pipe carry hot water?

No. Ashirvad's uPVC is limited to 60°C with pressure derating, which makes it a cold water pipe.

Which pipe is used for a geyser connection?

CPVC SDR 11 up to the geyser, joined through a brass threaded adaptor and a braided hose or short metal nipple.
