Reading a Plumbing Material List: A Guide for First-Time Builders in Bengaluru

CPVC fittings and valves

Quick answer: Decode the pipe material first: CPVC carries hot and cold water, PVC SWR is drainage, and uPVC is cold water supply. CPVC is sized in inch fractions (1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch), while SWR is in millimetres: 110mm for toilets, 75mm for shower and bath waste, 40mm for basins and sinks. Then count your bathrooms and kitchens against the traps, valves and elbows listed, and check for a waste allowance and the right solvent cement.

If you are building your first home in Bengaluru, you will at some point receive a material list from your plumber. It will be a column of items with names like "CPVC 1/2" SOC elbow" or "SWR 110mm Y-junction Type B" and a quantity next to each. You will need to either buy these materials yourself or give the list to a dealer and pay an invoice. Either way, understanding what you are buying saves money and prevents mistakes.

This guide explains the most common items on a residential plumbing material list in plain language.

Understanding the pipe type abbreviations

The first thing to decode is the pipe material. The most common abbreviations are:

  • CPVC: Chlorinated PVC. Used for both hot and cold water supply inside the building. Cream or off-white in colour. Required wherever water comes from a geyser or solar heater.
  • PVC: Regular polyvinyl chloride. Used for drainage (SWR) and sometimes for cold water supply lines. White or light grey in colour.
  • uPVC: Unplasticised PVC. Used for cold water supply, particularly in larger diameter lines and mains connections. Stiffer than regular PVC.
  • SWR: Soil, Waste, and Rain. Refers to PVC drainage pipes. Not a material on its own but a product category within PVC.
  • GI: Galvanised Iron. Older material, still used for water supply in some buildings but increasingly replaced by CPVC. Heavy and prone to internal rusting over time.

If a material list just says "PVC" without specifying SWR or pressure class, ask your plumber to clarify. The two product types are not interchangeable.

Pipe sizes and what they mean

CPVC pipes for residential use are typically sized in fractions of an inch: 1/2", 3/4", and 1". These refer to the nominal pipe diameter. In India, CPVC follows either the ASTM CTS standard (where the nominal size relates to the outside diameter) or the IS 15778 standard (where it relates to the nominal bore, similar to steel pipe sizing). Both standards use the same inch fractions but the actual physical dimensions differ slightly. If your plumber is specifying CTS-standard CPVC, the fittings must also be CTS standard.

SWR pipe sizes are in millimetres: 40mm, 75mm, 110mm, and 160mm are the most common residential sizes. The 110mm size is standard for toilet connections; 75mm is used for shower and bath waste; 40mm is for hand basin and kitchen sink connections.

If you see a size written as, for example, "50x32 reducer", it means a fitting that connects a 50mm pipe to a 32mm pipe. Reducers are common where a larger drainage line receives connections from several smaller lines.

Fitting types on the material list

Fittings are the connectors that join pipes and change their direction. A typical list will include:

  • Elbow (90 or 45 degree): Changes pipe direction. 45-degree elbows are preferred in drainage for reducing turbulence.
  • Tee: A T-shaped fitting that allows a branch connection. In drainage, a Y-junction (45 degrees) is preferred over a straight tee.
  • Coupler / Socket: Joins two pipes in a straight line. Used when a pipe length needs to be extended.
  • Reducer: Connects pipes of two different sizes.
  • Union: A three-part coupling that allows a pipe run to be disconnected without cutting. Used near valves and appliances that may need servicing.
  • End cap: Seals the end of a pipe during pressure testing or where a branch is planned but not yet connected.
  • Ball valve: A stop valve that can be opened or closed by turning a lever 90 degrees. Every apartment should have isolating ball valves on the supply lines to each bathroom and to the kitchen, so water can be shut off to individual areas during repair.
  • Trap (P-trap or bottle trap): A fitting that retains a water seal to prevent sewer gas from entering through a drain. Required under every basin, sink, shower, and bathtub.

Lengths, quantities, and waste

Pipes are sold in standard lengths: CPVC typically comes in 3-metre or 6-metre lengths; PVC SWR in 3-metre or 6-metre lengths depending on the brand. A material list will usually specify the number of pipe lengths required, not total linear metres, though sometimes it is the other way around. Clarify with your plumber.

Always include a waste allowance. A good plumber's estimate will already include this, but if the quantities look suspiciously round, ask about wastage. For complex plumbing with many short cuts, waste can be 10 to 15 percent of the pipe quantity. For simpler systems with long straight runs, waste is lower.

Also check whether solvent cement and primer are on the list. These are consumables that are easy to forget and essential for making joints. A CPVC system requires CPVC-specific solvent cement; do not let a plumber use PVC cement on CPVC fittings.

How to check the list against your building

You do not need to be a plumber to do a basic sanity check on a material list. Walk through your floor plan and count the bathrooms and kitchens. Each bathroom typically needs: supply pipes to the toilet, basin, shower or bath, and geyser; drainage connections from each fixture; a ball valve on the supply line; and traps under each drain fitting.

If your building has two bathrooms and a kitchen, and the material list has only 3 traps, it is probably short. If it has 40 elbows for a simple 2BHK, that may be excessive. These checks will not catch every error but they flag obvious problems before purchase.

It is also worth asking your plumber to mark the pipe routes on the floor plan before work starts. This makes the material list easier to verify and makes it possible to check that the work has been done as planned before the walls are plastered.

Getting the right price in Bengaluru

Material costs for a standard 2BHK plumbing system in Bengaluru vary significantly by brand choice, pipe grade, and the complexity of the layout. Plumbers who supply their own materials mark up the cost; buying directly from an authorised dealer and providing materials to the plumber typically saves 15 to 25 percent on material cost.

If you choose to supply your own materials, make sure the dealer provides a GST invoice. Keep the invoice for warranty purposes and for your own financial records. If your plumber is buying on your behalf, ask for the invoices from the dealer regardless.

AR Trading Company in Viveknagar supplies trade customers and self-build owners with Ashirvad, Astral, and Supreme pipes and fittings. You can share your material list via WhatsApp or the quote tool on our website to get current pricing before committing to purchase.

The storage tank and its fittings sit near the top of most material lists. What size Ashirvad tank a home needs, and what the fittings cost, works through that line item in detail.

Two columns on that sheet cause more queries than the rest put together. For what the HSN and GST column should say on every line, see our verified GST rate and HSN code table. For the size column, and why the number on the pipe is a name rather than a measurement, see the CPVC pipe size chart in mm and inches.
